The opening titles for Leigh Whannell’s first directorial feature Upgrade are the first spoken-word opening title sequence in over 50 years, with credits narrated by the film’s AI character, Kara. SPOILER ALERT! The film ends with another AI (Stem) being unleashed on the world, with potentially devastating effects. An AI’s point-of-view and growing cognizance of the world was the inspiration for our visualisation of the spoken credits. Beginning with a 2D audio waveform similarly recognisable to audiences from AI’s like Siri and other current-day digital voice assistants, sound waves then split outwards to become a 3D topography, representing a growth in awareness of the AI. With each vocalisation, an understanding of the world is refined: rudimentary landforms give way to increasing levels of detail. Finally the point of singularity is reached, changing the landscape (and human history) forever and foreshadowing the events of the film.
